Build a wind generator or using a wind power systems (wind turbine generators) for homes can be one of the more cost effective forms of generating electricity from a renewable energy source, of course it is all depends if you have the right site to install one. One would need at least a half acre of land available for installation and would also need at least 10 mph or higher of wind, if you have such a site it would be considered a good candidate to install a wind turbine. The wind power systems most commonly used for homes are generally not very large. They range from 3feet (1 meter) to 6feet (2 meters) in diameter, there are some as large as 22 feet (6.7 meters) in diameter that are used for more energy consumptive homes. These small wind turbines are very quiet, one would not hear any more noise than they would if wind were blowing through the trees.

Much like solar electric systems, a wind turbine can be used in two different ways: off-grid or on-grid. Here's the differences:

Off-grid wind power systems is exactly what it sounds like you generate absolutely all of the electricity you need for your home. Your home is not connected to a local electric utility company. These systems usually cost about 25% to 30% more than an on-grid system.

On-grid wind power systems (or 'grid-tie') sends all the electricity you generate back to the public electrical utility network (grid)  for which you are given credits for. At the end of each month the utility company determines how much electricity your home has consumed, if you are lucky they will owe you money. Unfortunately, what they pay you is a small fraction of what they charge you for the extra kilowatt-hours you generate. If you decide to go with on-grid design a system that will very closely offset the electricity you consume. It's very hard to try and make money from your power company.

Wind power systems are growing in popularity as people look for ways to save money and become less dependent on power companies. The wind is a very powerful renewable energy source, build a wind generator and capture some of it for yourself.
